His imagination pursues him throughout the play. He's continually reliving his crimes and fantasizing about present and future dangers. Nothing Lady Macbeth can say will quiet his mind. Before he kills Duncan, Macbeth sees a dagger floating in the air. After the murder, he hears voices. And later he sees Banquo's ghost.

They wash there hands only to help themselves feel better. Water is their way of escaping the guilt that haunts their minds. Lady Macbeth is deeply affected by her responsibility in the murder of Duncan. While planning the murder, Lady Macbeth does not want to feel remorse afterwards.

Following the murder, Lady Macbeth does not think about what she has done. But as time progresses, her mind suddenly turns to guilt. It weighs down on her conscience and it is all she can think about. She begins to sleepwalk, showing that her mind cannot stop thinking of the crime she has committed. When Lady Macbeth is sleepwalking, she becomes caught in a circle of madness as she continually washes her hands Goddard. Images of blood surround her and she uses water to wash her guilt away.

Lady Macbeth has changed her attitude about how she sees herself. She no longer can ignore what she has done and now sees herself as a killer. Lady Macbeth is an example of how guilt can change a person. She becomes so consumed in guilt that she ends up committing suicide to end her psychologically painful life.

Her thoughts become unbearable to live with and she leaves herself no choice but to end it all. Although it is an extreme case, it is true in human nature. Guilt has the potential to consume a person if it is not taken care of. Lady Macbeth chose not to deal with her guilt and her mind never let her forgot what she had done.
